Community Outreach Grant
The Greater Washington Council (GWC) is committed to helping its members further their professional development in the field of literacy. The Community Outreach Grant is awarded in the spring of each year to eligible members who wish to enhance the literacy work within their schools and communities. The GWC Grants Committee will review all information received, convene a selection meeting, select and inform recipients. A GWC Community Outreach Grant will be awarded in the amount of $300.
Nancy King Professional Growth
The Greater Washington Council (GWC) is committed to helping its members further their professional development in the field of literacy. The Nancy King Professional Growth Grant is awarded in the spring to eligible GWC members who wish to continue their study of literacy, present at literacy conferences, and/or participate in other literacy professional growth scholarship. The GWC Grants Committee will review all information received, convene a selection meeting, select recipients, and inform the recipients of the award. A GWC member will be awarded $300.
Teachers as Readers Grant
The Greater Washington Council (GWC) is committed to helping its members further their professional development in the field of literacy. The Teachers-as-Readers Grant is awarded in the spring to eligible GWC members who wish to pursue a focused study of literacy. The GWC Grants Committee will review all information received, convene a selection meeting, select and inform the recipients of the award. A GWC member will be awarded up to $300.
Teacher of the Year
Each local council of VSLA is challenged to select an outstanding teacher. This award recognizes members whose commitment to literacy is exemplary and unparalleled. The GWC Teacher of the Year Committee will review all information received, convene a selection meeting, select our local winner, and will forward the winning recipient’s application on to VSLA for consideration for the Ofie T. Rubin Reading Teacher of the Year. Eligible candidates must be a member of the local reading council for at least one year prior to selection. Click to Download the Application

Administrator of the Year

The GWC Administrator of the Year Committee will review all information received, convene a selection meeting, select our local winner, and will forward the winning recipient’s application on to VSLA for consideration for administrators' James D.
